Salvaged lumber comes into the yard at our Maine mill, carrying the metal used to connect pieces in source buildings. Hardware of all shapes and sizes adorns beams and decking from deconstructed buildings, and all of it needs to be removed before the lumber can be milled.
WHAT OUR DENAILERS SEE:
Beams in the yard are adorned with an incredible variety of hardware. The tenacity of this metal is admirable, but something to be bested by strategy and physical effort.TOOLS OF THE TRADE
There are tricks to denailing and tools of the trade, but the most important asset we have for this part of the milling process is the thoughtful diligence of the denailing team.TAKING OUT THE METAL
After we bring a load of salvaged beams into the yard, one of the first things we do is denail the lumber. Piece by piece, carefully and precisely, we remove metal from wood, always striving to retain as much lumber as possible. Once free of metal, our salvaged lumber can make its way to the dryer and the saws.SALVAGED HARDWARE REMOVED FROM LUMBER
The metal items removed from beams have their own kind of appeal. Knowing the weights and stresses they've withstood for many years makes us appreciate them even more.Salvaged hardware pieces are available for sale from the mill.
